The meditation classes we offer are suitable for all individuals whatever their level of interest, from those who seek simple relaxation and stress relief, to those who wish to learn about  Modern Buddhism. Everyone is welcome regardless of belief;  you do not need to be a Buddhist to attend.

A typical class consists of a simple relaxation meditation, a teaching, some discussion and a final meditation. The meditations are guided and are suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike. Each class is self-contained so feel free to start at any time.   Everyone is welcome…just drop in!

Most classes last an hour to an hour and a half.  There is no physical exercise, yoga, or stretching involved.

Attending the class

These drop-in classes or GP classes (General Programme Classes) are designed for you to pop in to any class.  While they are arranged around a topic, each class is self-contained. The range of topics includes Buddhist view, understanding the mind, improving relationships, letting go of anger, understanding karma, and more. You can attend the whole course or simply drop in whenever you can.

Q: How long are these classes?

Classes generally go on for an hour to an hour and a half. Look for more details on class pages.

Q: Do I need to bring anything?

You do not need to bring any mats or wear any special clothing. Comfortable chairs are used for seating. If you wish to take notes, please bring a pen and notepad.

Q: I’ve been coming to drop-in classes for a while. I really like what I hear. Is there something more I can try?

For those who want to deepen their experience of Buddhism, we also have the Foundation Program. The Foundation Program (FP) immerses us in Buddhist teachings by studying systematically one of five texts on the FP curriculum.

Q: Do I have to be a Buddhist to benefit from meditation?

No. Anyone can learn basic meditation and experience the great benefits. Buddhism is a non-evangelical religion. Buddhists respect all people, and are happy to help anyone regardless of whether they subscribe to another faith, or to none.

Q: Do I need to have experience in meditation or Buddhism to attend the classes?

No. All you need is the wish to improve yourself and the quality of your life.

Q: What is the cost of the classes?

A suggested donation of R60 per class. As a nonprofit organization, fees for classes and member contributions are our only source of income.

Q: What if I don’t have money and I want to go to a class?

Everyone can participate in the classes regardless of ability to pay. Nobody is ever turned away for lack of funds.
