Prayer in Buddhism: Meaning and Practice
Half Day Meditation Workshop Cape Town
Join us on this half day meditation workshop where we will explore what the meaning of prayer is in Buddhism and how we can practise it.
A prayer is a pure thought directed towards achieving particular goals, often expressed by words that are verbally recited. Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso says in his book Living Meaningfully, Dying Joyfully: ‘Many religious people, whether Buddhist or non-Buddhist, understand the efficacy of prayer through their own experience. Prayer is by nature intention or aspiration, and so it is essentially a mental action. The words of the prayer help us to concentrate our mind and evoke faith, but they are not the prayer itself. Indeed, we can pray without reciting any words.’ In this half day meditation workshop we will explore what the meaning of prayer is in Buddhism and how we can practise it.
