Foundation Programme

The Foundation Programme (FP) at Tushita KMC is an inspiring study programme that is specifically designed to improve our understanding and experience of meditation and Buddha’s teachings through a systematic study of six of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s books. The classes offer us the opportunity to study Buddhism and meditation closely with a qualified teacher, and include guided meditation, teaching and discussion. Through following this programme we will gain authentic realisations of Buddha’s teachings, and we learn everything about meditation from basic techniques that help us solve our daily problems to practices that lead to the most supreme happiness and inner peace. Furthermore, on FP we often meet new friends with whom we can share our insights and experience of the spiritual path. The teacher of FP is Gen Kelsang Namkhyen.

Universal Compassion

Inspiring Solutions for Difficult Times

This book gives a practical and uplifting explanation of how we can transform our day-to-day lives – including even the most demanding and difficult situations – into opportunities for personal and spiritual development. Ancient meditative techniques that have been tried and tested for centuries are brought alive and made relevant to our everyday experiences.

By pointing the way to an unchanging freedom and happiness, this immensely readable book challenges us to grow, and will have a remarkable impact on our life.

Where and when

FP is on Monday evenings from 7 to 9pm at Tushita KMC, 47 Trill Rd, Observatory, Cape Town.

What commitments are involved?

Participants enrol for a book or a section of a book at a time and then may study and remain on the programme for as long as they wish.

With each course participants undertake to:

  • attend all classes
  • study and memorize the essential points of the subject

In order to enrol you would need to have been to at least some drop-in meditation classes in order to have a basic understanding of Buddhism. You can then come along to sample an FP class before deciding whether to enrol. You can join at any stage of the book that is being studied.

Students who enrol on the Foundation Programme automatically become a Member of the Centre, which includes a monthly membership fee, starting at R400 per month. For more information about the membership options please click here.

If you have a question about FP or wish to join please contact Tushita KMC’s Education Programme Coordinator on 071 540 8855 or email
